The Wagner Society Announces a Free Lecture by

The Dramaturg of The New York City Opera

Cori Ellison

“A Ride with the Valkyries

WASHINGTON, D.C., OCTOBER 2003 –––– The Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. is pleased to announce a lecture by by the Dramaturg of The New York City Opera, Cori Ellison, on Thursday, October 30, 2003, at 7:30 P.M. at the George Washington University, Funger Hall, 2201 G Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C.  The event is open to the public.  Admission is free.

The lecture.  Wotan’s wife Fricka, their stepmother, calls them “Those Ill-Mannered Girls,” but because of their famous Ride of the Valkyries music, to the general public the Valkyries may be the most familiar aspect of Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung.  Cori Ellison’s talk will explore what Valkyries are and why they have imprinted themselves so enduringly on our culture.  Also, she will speak to the ways that Brünnhilde  -- the Valkyrie of the title of Wagner’s opera being presented in November by The Washington Opera -- is both similar to and different from her sister Valkyries.

The speaker.  Cori Ellison, Dramaturg at The New York City Opera, teaches at The Julliard School, writes regularly for The New York Times and other publications, and appears on The Metropolitan Opera’s radio broadcasts as a commentator and a quiz moderator and panelist.  She helped pioneer the Met’s simultaneous translation system, “Met Titles,” and writes supertitles for opera companies nationwide.  Her singing translations of operas have been performed by The New York City Opera and The English National Opera.  She frequently writes and lectures on opera and vocal music.  In September, she was a featured speaker at the well-received three-day seminar jointly sponsored by The Wagner Society and The Smithsonian Resident Associates Program, Der Ring des Nibelungen:  Wagner’s Epic Vision.

The Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. is a private, non-profit organization for the study and enjoyment of Wagner's art.  Its series of lectures, the Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart Emerging Singers Program, and social events will continue through June 2004.  Many programs are free to the public.
