WASHINGTON, D.C., October 9, 2001 ----- The Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. announces a lecture by a noted musicologist Saul Lilienstein on Thursday, November 15, 2001, at The George Washington University, Funger Hall 103, 2201 G Street, Northwest. In a lecture free to Wagner Society members and to the public, the beloved lecturer will be featured at second of three fall events of the Society's Year of Die Meistersinger series. Mr. Lilienstein's lecture is titled Die Meistersinger in Historical Perspective. It will be at 7:30 P.M.

Mr. Lilienstein, a former student of Leonard Bernstein, is a conductor, scholar, and producer of opera. He was a choral conductor in Baltimore in the 1960s. Later, he turned to opera and produced and conducted more than fifty works as Artistic Director of The Harford Opera Theater and of Operetta Renaissance. As a professor of music, he has lectured at The Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Studies, Morgan State University, The Peabody Conservatory, Essex Community College, and The Maryland Institute. He is a frequent lecturer for The Washington Opera and has recorded two sets of commentaries on the works presented by The Washington Opera in 2000-2001 season and the works being presented during the current year. Both sets of CDs are available from The Washington Opera. He is currently teaching a course on the Italian comedia del'arte for the Johns Hopkins School of Continuing Studies, and has just begun lectures on Jewish music in the United States in a Smithsonian Institution series called "Listening to the Immigrant."

Mr. Lilienstein is noted for never repeating an opera lecture he has given before. He develops each of his lectures with a new look at an opera score. On November 15, he will present a fresh and novel look at this monumental Wagner masterpiece. It will be the second time for him to address the Society on Die Meistersinger, his favorite opera.

The Wagner Society of Washington, D.C. is a private non-profit organization established for the study and enjoyment of Wagner's art. Its Year of Die Meistersinger has free monthly lectures. In its Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart Emerging Singers Program, it will present five aspiring Wagner singers in concert on October 19th at the German Embassy. The Wagner Society welcomes new members. Membership forms are available at www.wagner-dc.org.
