Das Liebesverbot
Glimmerglass Opera has announced that it will present the first fully-staged production in North America of Richard Wagner’s opera Das Liebesverbot (Forbidden Love) as part of its 2008 Festival Season. Performances will take place in July and August at the Alice Busch Opera Theater next to Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, upstate New York.
This early work by Wagner has been fully staged on a number of occasions in Germany and Ireland, but never before in North America. In 1983, it was performed in concert at the Waterloo Festival in Stanhope, New Jersey, as part of the Wagner centenary celebrations.
Das Liebesverbot, a comic opera inspired by William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure Season in which all the season’s repertory will be linked to Shakespeare and set on a stage resembling an Elizabethan theater. The premiere is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2008, with the final performance on Saturday, August 23, 2008.
This advance notice allows those interested in Wagner to plan accordingly. Glimmerglass Opera’s General & Artistic Director Michael MacLeod says: “Book for Bayreuth in 2007; come to Glimmerglass in 2008!”
