Details

On three occasions (in 1874, 1877, and 1880), discouraged by criticism and difficult fundraising for Bayreuth, Wagner declared his intention to emigrate to America, specifically to Minnesota and to New York City, and even made plans to create a festival theater in the US. Dr. Vaget will describe Wagner’s plan to start a Bayreuth in America, including the role played by Dr. Jenkins, Wagner’s American dentist. A prevailing theme is Wagner’s lifelong attachment to the revolutionary heritage of the United States.

Dr. Hans Rudolf Vaget is Helen and Laura Shedd Professor Emeritus of German Studies and Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature, Smith College. He is the author of several works on Wagner and Thomas Mann, and was a founding editor of wagnerspectrum, a German-language journal of Wagner Studies, which debuted in 2005. He is also on the advisory board of the Wagner Society of New York.
