Over the course of the Ring, Wotan’s self-understanding evolves, embodied in the music. The arrogant, ambitious damn-the-consequences god of Das Rheingold realizes the limits of his power in Die Walküre. By Siegfried he has achieved wisdom and bows to the next generation.
John J. H. Muller IV has taught music history at Juilliard since 1980. He has lectured at Bayreuth, for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Wagner Society of New York, among other organizations.
