Curated by The Phillips Collection’s Director Emerita, Dorothy Kosinski, and in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center, this multimedia concert reimagines the myth of Orpheus, exploring its influence across music, dance, and visual arts, with music by Gluck, Offenbach, Mahler, Stravinsky and Wagner!

  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto no. 4 in G major, Opus 58. Andante con moto

  • Richard Wagner: Good Friday Music from Parsifal (arrangement for chamber orchestra by Iain Farrington)

  • Gustav Mahler: Ending of “VI. The Farewell” from The Song of the Earth (chamber orchestra version by Arnold Schönberg and Rainer Riehn)

  • Jean Cocteau. Excerpt from his film Orpheus

  • Philip Glass: Orphée’s return from opera Orphée

  • Stravinsky: Orpheus ballet

    • First Scene. Orpheus weeps for Eurydice

    • Pas d’action. The Bacchantes attack Orpheus

    • Third Scene. Orpheus Apotheosis


Post-concert discussion. The program will engage with performers from the Peabody Institute and experts from the Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
