Details
For the Wagner Society's first program of 2023, WSWDC Chairman Jim Holman will present a series of lectures on "Richard Wagner: Four Masterpieces," covering Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, and Parsifal. They will comprise a Short Course on Zoom, sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at American University. Jim will discuss the operas’ origins, creative histories, and stories, interpretations of their meaning, and their place in music history. These lectures offer a great opportunity to refresh your knowledge of the operas, and an excellent introduction to those who are unfamiliar with them.
The four lectures will be offered online only, on January 30 and 31, and February 1 and 2, from 1:45-3:15 pm. They will include substantial audio-visuals, including clips from each opera. Each session will conclude with an interactive Q&A.
OLLI offers more than 30 Short Courses during the weeks of January 30-February 3 and February 6-10. Each one runs for 2-5 days during one of the weeks. Topics range from "Climate Change and Human Health" to "The Myth and Reality of the Wild West." You can take up to four courses for a single fee of $100. To participate, please register and sign up for the February Shorts Lottery, which will be held on Thursday, January 12.
